Service Charges

Following is a summary of service charges approved by the Town of Markham Public Library Board.

New Late Return Charges effective March 2, 2009.

The Town of Markham Public Library Board approved a new late return fee structure effective March 2, 2009.

Books, magazines, talking books, music CDs, CD ROMs, children's kits, Express Bestsellers $0.30 per day, per item up to a maximum of $6.00 per item for each loan period.

For your convenience, the Library accepts payment for service charges by Interac, VISA, MasterCard, or cheque payable to the library branch. (Interac & credit card payments not available at Thornhill Village Branch)

Late return charges apply to all library users regardless of age, including seniors.
Books, magazines, talking books, music CDs, CD ROMs, children's kits, Express Bestsellers, Watt Readers $0.30 per day, per item up to a maximum of $6.00 per item for each loan period. Renewals, where permitted, are considered another loan period.
Video games, videocassettes and DVDs $2.00 per day, per item up to a maximum of $6.00 per item for each loan period. Renewals are considered another loan period.

Lost or Damaged Items

For lost or damaged items the replacement cost of the item will be charged. Refunds will be issued within 3 months upon presentation of the item and the receipt for payment.

Items returned in incomplete condition may result in levy of an appropriate service charge.

The Library does not accept replacement copies for lost, damaged or incomplete items.

Lost cards

Please report lost cards immediately to avoid unauthorized use of your card. A $2.00 replacement charge applies to lost or stolen cards. Damaged or worn-out cards will be replaced free of charge.

Not Sufficient Funds (NSF) Cheques

NSF cheques will result in a $30.00 administrative fee being charged to your customer record.

Borrowing Privileges

To help you manage your account borrowing privileges will be suspended when:

  • a total of ten (10) or more items are overdue.
  • there is an outstanding balance is $10.00 or more on a card.
  • 10 or more items are marked "Claimed Returned".

A minimum payment of $1.00 is required when customer owes $10.00 or more in service charges. The resulting balance after payment must be less than $10.00 for reinstatement of borrowing privileges.

Markham Public Library has contracted with a collection agency to assist in recovering overdue and unpaid service charges. All unresolved accounts over $40.00 are turned over to Unique International Recoveries Inc. A non-refundable $15.00 administrative charge is added to accounts sent to the collection agency.
