Markham: Lest We Forget
Lest We Forget
November 11
On November 11th, Canadians all across the country will gather at war memorials in some 2,000 cities, towns and villages. Here we will stand with our heads bowed and poppies on our breasts. During the two minutes of silence we will pause to remember the more than 100,000 brave Canadians who were killed during times of war. Each person will remember in his or her own way. Veterans may think of the comrades they left behind. Husbands and wives may think of the long wait for their spouses who went off to war and never returned. Parents may think of children who were so young when they left home for the very last time. These young men and women understood that enlistment in the Service would involve significant threat to life and limb, and yet they joined. Although the reasons for volunteering were varied, in almost every case there was some feeling and concern for the future, for the security of our country and for the preservation our way of life. They fought bravely, they suffered tremendously and they witnessed unspeakable horrors. For those of us who have not been personally affected by war, we must pause and reflect upon the great sacrifice that has been made so that we may enjoy the peace and freedom that we so often take for granted.
