ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY

Markham Public Library is home to two Kurzweil 3000 stations, one at the Markham Village Branch and the other at the Unionville Branch.

The Kurzweil 3000 is a computer which uses a computer monitor to display text in large print and uses a synthesized voice to read aloud.  The Kurzweil System can scan your document (letter, book, newspaper) and read it to you while displaying the text in large print on a computer screen.  It can also read pages from the Internet including emails.  The Kurzweil System has more than 1800 classic books preloaded into the computer which it can display and read to you.

HOMEBOUND SERVICE

To ensure all Markham residents have access to library services MPL offers homebound service to customers who are unable to leave their home to visit the library. Library staff will select materials for you based on your reading preferences and deliver them to you through Library staff or volunteers.  Materials that can be provided include hardcover fiction and non-fiction, paperbacks, large print, talking books, books in other languages, and music CDs. Material is loaned out for a period of 6 weeks with one renewal period of another 6 weeks, provided there are no holds on the borrowed items.

Homebound service is offered free to any resident of the Town of Markham who is confined to home for three months or longer due to age, illness, or physical disability. If the resident is unable to apply on their own a relative, friend, or caregiver may apply on their behalf.
