Storytimes
Storytimes are a great way to help children build the skills and confidence needed to learn how to read and write. Learning starts at birth. Children are able to absorb large amounts of information in their early years. This is why these years are such a powerful time to teach children to be readers for life. By reading to your child you are teaching them important pre-reading skills that are essential for school success. The Library is your partner in making your child a reader for life!
At storytime library staff engage participants with stories, songs and activities that match the developmental stages of the children attending. Storytimes highlight the six key pre-reading skills that are the stepping stones to reading success. Parents and caregivers learn how to encourage the reading habits of their child as well as how to develop the pre-literacy skills that prepare their child for learning to read.
Babies from birth to 18 months (with favourite adult) enjoy songs, action rhymes and books. Baby storytime gives your baby the opportunity to hear lots of language. Lap bounces, tickle songs and the simplest of stories build a foundation for a lifelong love of books and reading.
Toddlers from 18 to 36 months (with favourite adult) have fun with books, songs and activities as they build their early literacy skills. Preschool storytimes are a fun and instructive way for kids and grownups to share time together at the library.
