Pioneer Kids

To a child of Today…
                 ...from a child of Yesterday

Have you ever wondered about your community and the people who lived there long ago, long before your parents were born, or your grandparents – even before your great-grandparents?  Have you ever wondered how people traveled, what kind of food they used to eat, and most important of all – what school was like?

You and I are both children from Markham. You are living in the 21st Century, but I am a child from nearly 200 years ago. We both live in the same place, but our lives are very different.

Look around at the world you live in. You see televisions, video games and computers. When I was a child like you, I didn’t have any of those things. There was no electricity, but life was never boring. There was always so much to do on a pioneer farm.

There are so many things I want to show you and tell you about my life. Come with me on a journey back in time – almost 200 years!

We wish to extend a special thanks to Black Creek Pioneer Village and Markham Museum for allowing us to reproduce images from their collections for this website.
