Settlers Day at the Markham Museum June 12

This event will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the arrival of over 60 families from southern Pennsylvania. Come and learn about the life of some of Markham’s earliest settlers, take part in family and children’s activities such as candle making, train rides and games, and see the demonstration of over 40 pioneer crafts.

The event is presented by the Pennsylvania German Folklore Society of Ontario, Markham Historical Society, and the Markham Berczy Settlers Association. The Markham Museum is located at 9350 Hwy. 4, just north of 16th Ave. and is open from 1:00p.m. – 4:00p.m.

William Berczy - Varley Gallery Exhibit July 1

 “William Berczy: Man of Enlightenment” exhibit opens at the Varley Art Gallery, Unionville Main St. The exhibit will celebrate the life and work of William von Moll Berczy (1744-1813) painter, architect, entrepreneur, and Markham Pioneer. The exhibit runs until October 31st, 2004.

Unionville 150th Anniversary Year long events

Join in the festivities as Unionville celebrates 150 years since the naming of the village. The year long calendar of events includes something for the whole family.

June 4 – 6 The Unionville Village Festival, celebrating its 35th Anniversary. Festivities begin Friday June 4th with the Festival Dance with its 1970 theme. The event, which runs all weekend long, includes something for the whole family. 
June – September Summer Concert Series.
July 1 Canada Day
July 10 – 11 Celtic festival
August 2 Simcoe Day
August 20 – 22 Jazz Festival
August 28, 29 Doors Open Markham. Part of the year long Doors Open Ontario events.
September 18 Unionville Heritage and Big Band Festival
October 9 – 11 Unionville Oktoberfest
November Homes for the Holidays
December 35 Olde Tyme Christmas

Reesor Bicentennial Reunion July 2, 3

“The Reesor Homecoming”. This is the launch event of the celebration of 200 years of the Reesor family in Canada. The event, which will feature outdoor entertainment and BBQ fare, will be held at 8949 Reesor Road at the site of the Reesor Gates from 5:00pm – 9:30pm. A $2 nominal fee will be charged for all persons over 12 years. Campsites are available at a cost of $10. 

Saturday July 3rd – “Reesor Bicentennial Celebration”. Markham Fairgrounds 10801 McCowan Road. A wagon train, in remembrance of the historic trek in 1804, will leave Reesor Gates at 7:00am, and will arrive at the Fairground about 11:00am. The day-long event at the Markham Fairgrounds will include displays of Reesor family genealogy, demonstrations of pioneer skills, silent auction, and food. A formal program is also planned.

Plaque Unveiling July 4

All are welcome to attend the dedication of a historic plaque at the Bicentennial Monument at the Markham Civic Centre. The plaque, honouring the Pennsylvania German families who settled in Markham in the 1803-1816 period, has been created by the Pennsylvania German Folklore Society of Ontario. Beginning at 2:00pm, come and see displays by various community groups including a reconstructed Conestoga wagon. Ceremonies will begin at 2:30p.m.


Markham Berczy Settlers Association Presents:

“Berczy Settlers Family Research Days” July 5 -- 11

Events include a performance of The Stars Celebrate a Dream at the Markham Theatre, two sessions of “Our Ancestors’ Stories” with Bob Shank and Lorne Smith, a bus tour of Berczy Settler sites, a visit to the Varley Gallery to see the exhibit and hear a lecture on the life and work of William Berczy by curator Katarina Atanassova, the Markham Berczy Settlers Association Annual General Meeting, and the festivities conclude with the Anniversary Church Service at Bethesda Lutheran Church followed by a Buffet Brunch at Angus Glen Golf Course.
